Filipino actor 'Sid Lucero' gets Emmy nomination

Once again the Philippines proved that Filipinos excel in the field of entertainment and are at par with the best globally.

Cannes: Bob Hoskins and Filipino actor Sid Lucero are among the nominees for the 38th International Emmy Awards, it was announced yesterday by The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, while Simon Cowell will receive a special honour.

The actors are among 39 nominees in 10 categories for the television awards. The winners will be announced at a black-tie ceremony hosted by actor Jason Priestley on November 22 in New York.

The nominations span 15 countries: Argentina, Brazil, Denmark, Germany, Israel, Japan, Mexico, Portugal, Romania, South Africa, South Korea, Thailand, the Philippines, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. The competition took place with three rounds of judging over six months, with participation from over 700 judges in 50 different countries, including the UAE.

Sid Lucero is nominated for Best Actor in his role in the telenovela 'Dahil May Isang Ikaw'.  Lucero coming from a known showbiz clan in the Philippines (he is Timothy Mark Eigenmann, son of veteran actor Mark Gil) is definitely one of the best actors of his genre having won acting awards both in the international and local scene.  In 2008, he and Emilio Garcia were among the first Filipinos who won the Best Actor award in Thessaloniki International Film Festival in Greece for their outstanding portrayal in the film “Selda”.  Lucero won the 31st Gawad Urian Best Actor award also for the same role. His first acting award was given by Golden Screen in Donsol for Best Breakthrough Performance of an Actor.

ANGELINA JOLIE stars in SALT

'Twas another movie night on Tuesday (27 July) and we are watching SALT, the new Angelina Jolie flick.  I usually check out reviews before viewing, this time I didn't.  I was a bit apprehensive, don't know what to expect but I was not at all disappointed.

SALT is a notable spy-thriller that will keep you at the edge of your seat.  Angelina Jolie, once more proved that she can punch, kick, and shoot just like any male action star out there. Amazing!

  

Before becoming a CIA officer, Evelyn Salt swore an oath to duty, honor, and country. She will prove loyal to these when a defector accuses her of being a Russian sleeper spy. Salt goes on the run, using all her skills and years of experience as a covert operative to elude capture, protect her husband, and stay one step ahead of her colleagues at the CIA.

The movie opens with Evelyn SALT (Angelina Jolie), seen as captive in a military base in North Korea.  We go back to a dark time in Salt’s life, when she was captured behind enemy lines and violently tortured. With the love and dedication of her boyfriend (and later on husband) Mike (August Diehl), and help from fellow CIA Ted Winter (Liev Schreiber), she is saved from hell. 

Back in Washington, from hard-hitting lady spy, Salt returns as a CIA agent who is now content to stay behind a desk while enjoying her marital bliss.  

Conflict arise when a Russian defector named Orlov (Daniel Olbrychski) comes into the picture and reveals plans about a plot to assassinate the Russian president, who will be coming to New York City to attend the funeral of the recently-deceased U.S. Vice President. He says there is a sleeper agent in the agency's midst -- Salt herself!

This is where the chase begins.  Salt, fearing that her husband could be in danger is forced to go on the run - working her way from Washington, D.C. to New York and back again.  Could it only be to save her husband or to clear her name… or could she really be the assassin Orlov claims her to be. 

Salt, written by Kurt Wimmer is a good mix of suspense, drama and thriller.  You can't say the movie keeps you guessing about what's next as attentive viewers will figure out the true villain(s) well before the climax.

Overall , Salt is filled with your usual spy-movie conventions but the chase is the whole point and this is what will keep you entertained.

 

The movie ends with Jolie escaping by jumping out of the plain... could there be a sequel?
