Bingtang Hulu - Beijing candied fruit - Sweets that aid digestion

Just landed in China in freezing November of 2009, we were greeted by these bright colored candied fruit called the bīngtáng húlù. It's crispy on the outside, soft and chewy in the inside. Instantly this became our favorite munch while in Beijing... yum yum!

The bīngtáng húlù is a skewer of around half a dozen hawthorns dipped in sugar syrup, which hardens into a shiny candy coating. This snack is popular during fall and winter months, when the hawthorn along with its cousin - crab apple are in season. The Chinese believe that hawthorns aid digestion, so this is one sweet treat you shouldn't feel guilty eating.
